Have you noticed that most people here seem incapable of rational thought?...I guess that’s not so surprising given the type of forum, but as you know, other forums are often the same despite being more specific, ie, focused on subject matter that implies rational/critical thinking is a prerequisite for admission and meaningful participation.

The fact of the matter is, you’re either religious or you’re rational and value objectivity….if you do value rationality, it can’t be an accident or mere circumstance, it must be the result of having not just the basic level of intelligence, not just the basic thinking skills, but also, a certain amount of knowledge and factual information that you’ve evaluated using your intelligence, your thinking skills and your existing knowledge as a reference point.

Most people still don’t know the difference between the possible and impossible, but again, hardly surprising given the fact that this type of consideration is usually only undertaken by students of philosophy or those who require the ability to make exacting measurements aka science and philosophy and arguably journalism{ouch, did I really include journo’s}

What I’m getting at is that when I mentioned Aliens are possible, some people suggested that’s no different to believing in God, however, there is one major difference, and that’s the definition of each, whereby an Alien is nothing but another life form , and considering we know life forms do actually exist, it’s hardly a stretch to assume that there must be other life forms given the size and age of the Universe{infinite}….in fact, it would be irrational to assume otherwise given infinity as your playground.

But when it comes to God, people feel free to define him/it/her however they want, but it’s a definition that always, I repeat, always avoids rational scrutiny, ie, if one claims to know God, their definition will never ever allow me to independently verify their claim…….of course, without the ability to verify, and without proof that others have access to knowledge streams that I don’t, I have every reason to assume they’re either mistaken, or outright lying….granted I think most people are mistaken/deluded.

Have you also noticed that this forum seems largely devoid of scientists and philosophers, oh sure, there are some here who quote other experts or authorities, but without the ability to think rationally and critically, their quotes are subject to the same problems that claims of God’s existence are, ie, they can’t be understood or verified…..as many so-called famous philosophers seem to be in the business of making simple concepts as complex as possible……..and don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I lack the ability to simplify complexity, it’s more so that what’s been said is illogical or inapplicable.

Speaking of basic facts…..here’s some that you’re well aware of….
1….we exist
2….the universe exists.
3….we have no evidence whatsoever that our existence or the universe’s existence rests upon a creator of some form.

From these basic and verifiable facts, we can conclude, and have to conclude that the universe is eternal, ie, it has no start and no possible end as matter cannot be destroyed, and without an adjacent universe to disappear to, it must always remain within the one infinitely sized universe……the one we can verify by simply opening our eyes.

Now I’m sure the mystery freaks at UM.com are going to hate the sound of that…..which is odd considering the amount of mystery contained within something infinite in size, but the truth is, claiming the universe is both eternal and infinite are the both logical assertions, ie, you can’t refute them, oh sure, you can deny them, but refute, no chance, unless you’re prepared to accept logical fallacy as having merit.

People need to remember that various assertions come pre-wrapped with logical implications, eg, if one claims God did it, I’m entitled to ask who made God, of course, this can’t be answered satisfactorily, and results in an infinite regress aka explaining nothing….yet this is the typical answer provided by religious folk, but as I’ve mentioned, it’s not rational to be religious, and unless one has intelligence, thinking skills and knowledge, proposing God as an answer might seem more than reasonable.

I should stress that by definition, there’s probably plenty of people at this forum and various forums that could be deemed “intelligent”…..problem is, without both the thinking skills and the knowledge components, all that intelligence essentially goes to waste……..but unfortunately, due to the truth that most people have God complexes {they see themselves as smart and superior despite denials and supposed faith in a superior being}, we also have to deal with extraordinary levels of arrogance, ie, “**** you, I’m right cause I say so”………logic, rationality, facts, figures, proof, scientific fact are irrelevant to these type of people.

So this is our problem Jen…..how do we reach people who know nothing meaningful in the truthstakes, and wilfully reject proper knowledge and the thinking skillset of philosophy to boot.

It’s also interesting that Ripley asks “how do we apply our beliefs in the real world”…..obviously knowing full well that most people would consider us as lofty or crazy, IOW, she knows the average person is clueless yet dares to ask how we get around such an insurmountable problem……nice one Ripley, but that only exposes you as being too lazy to properly educate yourself and come to terms with the fact that most people have always hated the truth.

When I started studying philosophy, the philosophy of science and science in general, I was up and down and all over the place……the reason being is that I hadn’t fully developed my thinking skills, but once I had, it was a whole new ball game, a rather horrifying ball game I might add, cause I was able to evaluate almost any subject of my choosing and learn how foolish our approach to it had been……ie, this forum is not unlike the real world, in that the rampant irrationality witnessed here is a reflection of the real state of knowledge and rationality….ie, ”tragic”.
